Funny People (?)

For those of you that have bared witness to the film Funny People, you may have noticed that the title is rather misleading. By that, I mean that the film is clearly not about funny people.

The story centers around Seth Rogan, a young stand-up comedian struggling to make his way into the successful world of comedy. Adam Sandler plays a successful comedic actor who has reached a slower part of his career. When Sandler is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he enlists the help of Rogan as he sets off on a one-last-shot at stand-up comedy (his roots) and to apologize for all the things that went wrong with the girl that got away. However, (*spoiler alert!) Sandler beats the cancer. So his mission now is to actually win back the girl of his dreams.

From this point on, the film takes an odd turn. The rest of the movie from here on, which is the majority of the film, centers around Sandler living with the girl and her children while her husband is away on business. This ruins the film! The kids are cute, but that is about it. Every argument and reasoning behind why he still loves her and why she eventually loves him back, but then suddenly doesn't makes zero sense! It is the opposite of a convincing story.

Secondly, the comedic failure of this bomb. There are dozens of jokes in this movie, most of which centered around Sandler, Rogan, and the other comedians they meet along the way. Not one joke is funny! Also, if you had not noticed, Adam Sandler was never a funny comedian. He's just a great producer that gets hilarious writers for his films. Rogan is funny, but he's given virtually no good lines. The only true hilarious character in this film is Aziz Ansari as Randy, or should I say, Raaaaaaaandy! He is in the film for five minutes, when he easily deserved to be the star.

Anyway, I encourage you to watch this movie just to see how terrible it is. In the meantime, check my boy Aziz doing his impression of Randy!

And thats the way it works!

  1. I feel I must interject you...

You have some very valid points concerning Judd Apatow's latest directing disaster "Funny People." Given that is was an Apatow flick, I believe a lot of people ventured into the movie thinking it was going to be comedy gold.

The movie is technically about people who make a living off of being funny, therefore they are "funny people." But, the characters Rogen and Sandler are portraying represent what the reality of these so called "funny people" really is.

I understand the difficulty of watching such distinct comedic actors take a serious note. But I believe people overlook the beauty of this story, because they go in expecting it to be a hilarious riot. I think you have to respect (and hopefully understand) the relationship between the three roommates because it portrays the difficulty in coming up in the entertainment business and how easy it is to throw your friends under the bus in order to gain some momentum for yourself.

Lastly, since I declare myself to be Seth Rogen's #1 fan, I must point out that his name is spelled Rogen and not Rogan. (It's a simple mistake, but I admire his work so much that, I believe as a fan appreciating an artist, it's necessary to know their name correctly.) Seth Rogen didn't get very many lines, but the disappointing part is that he wrote a lot of his own material for that movie and is credited as being an executive producer. I personally believe that without Seth Rogen's distinct comedic mind giving input to the overall movie, it would've been worse.

(Oh and Aziz Ansari is a hilarious comedian. He never disappoints with the funny. If you haven't already seen it, you should check out this great interview with Jimmy Kimmel. http://www.hulu.com/watch/99512/jimmy-kimmel-live-aziz-ansari-part-2)

  2. Luckily, i never had the chance to see this movie. I was never really a big fan of Adam Sandler anyway. Everytime I see him he's always yelling at someone.

Thanks for the novel Aurora. I'll be on page 172 now.

  3. I'm currently on page 185 of previous post, but all kidding aside, I really liked Adam Sandler in the 90's ala: Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, etc.

Ever since then though, he just hasn't been as funny. Maybe its because Sandler acted about as old as I was at the time, but since he grew up, not as funny.

Not a fan of Seth Rogan either.

  4. Unfortunately, this movie wasn't intended to be a comedy. It wasn't even intended to be a dramedy. This was supposed to be Judd Apatow's "mature" movie. It was very misleading and I don't appreciate the movie telling us who's funny when they aren't funny.

  5. I haven't seen this movie yet but I heard the title is misleading. I like all the actors that are in the film and will watch it when its released on Netflix. I think people went into this movie expecting it to be a laugh out loud comedy but it wasn't. It is a film about funny people. I try to watch a film with no expectations and hopefully a good story. I'll see how this turns out.

  6. I love Adam Sandler! The funny part about him is that he does just yell and make dumb jokes. Maybe the movie wasn't super good, but don't hate Adam.
